University of Turku - Customer Case Study

The University of Turku, one of Finland’s largest universities, needed a secure way to verify the identities of international students during enrollment, especially during the pandemic when in-person checks and registered mail were not viable. The university had been using a temporary video-call process that required significant staff time, taking an average of 30 minutes per identification. To address this, it turned to Signicat and its VideoID remote identity proofing solution.

Signicat implemented a platform-independent remote identity verification flow that checks a passport, ID card, or driver’s license, compares the user’s selfie to the ID photo, and adds a liveness check. The result was full automation of the identification process, saving about 30 minutes per verification, reducing support burden, and allowing students to complete verification anytime without a video call. Signicat’s solution also met the higher eIDAS security requirements, equivalent to a Finnish online banking ID-level identification.
