Blue Bottle’s Lucy Dana on Using Data to Drive Digital Innovation and Connect More People to Coffee

Blue Bottle Coffee, the Oakland‑based specialty coffee company with 1,300 employees and 80+ cafes worldwide, was outgrowing manual systems and struggling to turn omnichannel data from cafes, its e‑commerce site, and mobile app into actionable insights. To democratize access and enable non‑technical users (VPs, cafe leaders, and coffee buyers) to self‑serve analytics, Blue Bottle partnered with Sigma Computing and adopted the Sigma analytics platform and dashboards.

Sigma Computing delivered interactive Sigma workbooks, dashboards, and map charts that let teams query the warehouse without SQL, monitor model performance, and surface local insights. By using Sigma to measure the gap between an ML pastry‑demand model and actual orders, Blue Bottle increased pastry order accuracy by 8% since July 2019, reduced waste, and used Sigma insights to guide retail real estate and product decisions as it scales globally.
