A Siemens PLM Case Study
PlySim is a composite structural engineering consultancy in Edinburgh, Scotland, focused on finite element analysis for renewables, marine, and civil engineering work. As the company took on complex blade and other composite structures for clients worldwide, it needed software that could handle detailed composite layups, meshing, and postprocessing efficiently. It evaluated several options and found Siemens PLM’s Femap particularly strong for its composite analysis tools and documentation.
Using Siemens PLM’s Femap and its API, PlySim automated blade model creation and improved its workflow for analysis and review. For one project, blade FE model creation fell from a week to less than a day, a more than 80-percent reduction in modeling time, and four blades were completed in 9 days instead of 20. PlySim also reported a 500+ percent improvement in modeling productivity and used the software to help show customers the benefits of carbon spar caps, resulting in a better blade and new commercial opportunities.
