Whale, a specialist pump designer and manufacturer with operations in Bangor, Northern Ireland and California, faced the twin challenges of expanding its product range and offering rapid design/prototyping services while meeting strict regulatory standards for gas and electrical products. To address these needs Whale has used Solid Edge (and Femap) from Siemens PLM since 2001, with Majenta PLM Limited providing distribution and support.

Siemens PLM’s Solid Edge and Femap enabled advanced surfacing, easy pipework design, integrated simulation and photorealistic rendering, tied into Whale’s 3D printing and rapid-prototyping workflow. The solution delivered early analysis and IP protection, cut complex product design from about 12 months to four months (in some cases enabling prototyping in 48 hours), sped time-to-market by ~20%, and increased product launch throughput by a third.
