Case Study: Bayer achieves smarter, future-ready aspirin production with Siemens MES and automation

A Siemens Mobility Case Study

Bayer keeps aspirin production running for 30 years with Siemens Mobility

Bayer faced challenges at its long-standing aspirin production plant in Bitterfeld, Germany, including the risk of production outages from an aging, non-migratable system landscape and the loss of institutional knowledge due to personnel changes. To ensure long-term competitiveness, the customer sought a new manufacturing execution system (MES) and turned to vendor Siemens Mobility for a solution involving Opcenter Execution Pharma and Simatic Batch integrated with Simatic PCS 7.

Siemens implemented its complete MES and automation solution in stages during ongoing operations, avoiding any production downtime. The integrated systems allow for event-based workflows and quicker process changes. Supported by Siemens with Hypercare and 24/7 standby, the migration was a success, resulting in processes running at least as fast as before and a shift to paperless documentation. The project strengthened the long-term partnership between the two companies, culminating in a lifecycle service agreement.
