Codemasters, a leading developer and publisher, needed to ensure its MMORPG Dragon Empires delivered a consistent, playable experience to users connecting from around the world over a wide range of broadband and narrowband internet links. Testing over the LAN proved unrealistic, so the studio faced the challenge of reproducing real-world network conditions during development and beta to avoid late-stage performance surprises.
By adopting Shunra PerformanceSuite to emulate latency, packet loss, out-of-order packets and other Internet characteristics, Codemasters was able to reproduce and fix network-related bugs early (including an out-of-order packet issue), drastically cut debugging time and resources, and focus beta testing on gameplay balance rather than network troubleshooting—delivering higher confidence in the game’s real-world performance.
