How to Run a Successful Hashtag Contest and Collect 106K Entries

CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) wanted to broaden the appeal of cruising beyond the usual audiences during its month-long "Plan a Cruise Month" promotion and set an ambitious goal of at least 100,000 entries. To run a low-friction, multi-platform hashtag giveaway that included photos, videos and daily featured itineraries, CLIA partnered with ShortStack and relied on a hashtag-to-enter approach plus a dedicated microsite to manage the many moving parts.

ShortStack’s custom design services built the mobile-optimized microsite, implemented the hashtag-to-enter feature and integrated promotional videos, a calendar of daily cruise highlights, entry forms and ShortStack’s Random Entry Picker for weekly winners. The campaign generated more than 106,000 entries (about 83,000 via Instagram and Twitter and 23,000 via the microsite), exceeded CLIA’s benchmarks, boosted travel-agent engagement and helped convert increased interest into bookings.
