Skoon Cat Litter stays profitable despite thin margins and costly freight

Skoon Cat Litter, a natural and non-toxic cat litter brand, faced razor-thin margins and high freight costs as it expanded from wholesale in South America to direct-to-consumer sales in the US. The company also needed major customer-acquisition funding, but traditional banks required personal guarantees and didn’t offer enough financing; Skoon turned to Shopify Capital and Shopify Credit.

Shopify helped Skoon secure no-personal-guarantee funding and a pay-in-full cashback card to manage inventory, time freight orders for lower-cost periods, and cover marketing and operating expenses. As a result, Skoon acquired and retained about 7,000 subscribers, reduced capital expenditures, and reached profitability in 2023, with Shopify supporting its growth on more sustainable terms.
