Ridgewood Publishing set out to self-publish ICONIC, a 240‑page coffee‑table book documenting every major Apple product, but faced the uphill challenge common to independent publishers: creating a seamless buying experience and handling potential traffic and fulfillment demands if the book gained attention. The publisher needed a reliable ecommerce and fulfillment stack that could scale quickly and handle payments, refunds, discounts and reporting without a custom build.
They launched the store on Shopify (with the main site on Squarespace and fulfillment via ShipStation), which absorbed a Wall Street Journal–driven surge—about 15,000 visitors and roughly 1,000 copies sold in the first week—and helped nearly sell out the first print run. Shopify’s built‑in tools and app ecosystem handled orders, refunds, abandoned carts and international shipping logistics, while mobile notifications and support made operations manageable for a one‑person team.
