Leesa beat its bed-in-a-box competitors to market using Shopify Plus

Leesa, co‑founded in 2014 by David Wolfe, sells luxury mattresses shipped in compact boxes and offered with a 100‑night trial. Facing a consolidated mattress market, Wolfe aimed to cut out middlemen and sell premium beds at a fraction of big‑box prices, but the team was burning cash building a custom e‑commerce site and risked launch delays that would hurt their first‑mover advantage.

A few months before launch Leesa scrapped its custom build and moved to Shopify Plus, using the platform’s reliability and PriceRule API to scale, offer programmatic discounts to veterans and first responders, and expand internationally. The move enabled rapid growth—$800,000 in month one and $30 million in year one—while freeing the team to focus on marketing and social impact, resulting in thousands of mattresses donated to charities serving the homeless.
