A Shopify Case Study
Jesus’ Economy is a Bellingham, WA-based nonprofit that creates jobs and churches in the developing world by selling fair-trade products handmade by artisans in Rwanda, Uganda, Haiti, Zambia and Kenya. Their challenge was raising funds and routing every donation exactly where donors designate while growing sales and traffic without the marketing budget of larger retailers.
They solved this by building on Shopify—using the Mobilia theme plus custom code to handle donations and other nonprofit needs—and deploying apps like Bold Upsell (to invite overhead donations at checkout), Shopify POS for events, review and social integrations, and MailChimp. The result: most sales now come from people they meet in person (who then buy online), with search and social also contributing, and the checkout upsell has proven effective at covering day-to-day costs while Shopify handles customer management.
