Case Study: Nanoleaf achieves global expansion and checkout donations with Shopify

A Shopify Case Study

How Nanoleaf Expands Internationally & Allows Charitable Donations at Checkout

Nanoleaf is a green-technology company that designs modular LED and IoT lighting (best known for the Aurora). As it scaled internationally, customers began facing unexpected taxes, tariffs and courier fees — one European buyer was even asked to pay €100 at delivery — exposing gaps in Nanoleaf’s supply chain, fulfillment and international checkout experience.

To fix this, Nanoleaf moved to Shopify Plus, set up four localized storefronts and strategically placed warehouses to offer native languages, local currencies and faster, duty-transparent delivery, and added a checkout donation option in partnership with WWF (60% of customers opted in). The changes supported a physical footprint in 30 countries and an online presence in 80, helped ecommerce volumes and sales accelerate (ecommerce expected to grow ~8x and overall sales 5–7x in 2017), and reduced costs (switching to Shopify Payments cut processing fees, saving roughly $12k per $1M).
