Case Study: Leesa achieves rapid growth and nearly $30M in sales with Shopify

How Leesa is Disrupting the Mattress Industry by Shipping Beds in Boxes & Making Richard Branson Proud

Leesa is a direct-to-consumer mattress startup founded by David Wolfe that set out to disrupt a consolidated, confusing mattress industry by cutting out middlemen and selling a simple, high-quality foam mattress rolled and shipped in a box. The founders faced entrenched manufacturers and retailers, high legacy prices, and the risk of launching a new ecommerce business with limited runway.

Leesa’s solution was a three-layer foam mattress sold online with a 100-night trial, free returns, and fast deployment on Shopify Plus so the team could focus on marketing and growth instead of tech. The approach paid off: $800K in sales in its first full month, nearly $30M in 2015, rapid international rollouts, $9M in funding, and a strong social-impact program that donates one mattress for every ten sold (4,000+ donated), giving the brand both scale and purpose.
