Case Study: Jones Soda returns to profitability after a decade of losses with Shopify Plus

A Shopify Case Study

Preview of the Jones Soda Case Study

How Jones Soda Saved Itself from a Decade of Unprofitability and $58 Million in Losses

Jones Soda, an indie beverage maker known for customer-submitted photo labels and alternative distribution, spent nearly a decade losing money—34 straight unprofitable quarters and about $58 million in cumulative losses. The firm had overexpanded, overspent, cycled through leadership, and been held back by an outdated Magento website and clunky operations, which constrained sales and customer experience.

CEO Jennifer Cue returned to refocus the brand, cut costs, tie employee pay to performance, and prioritize customer-driven products and fulfillment. Moving ecommerce to Shopify Plus empowered the team to ship faster, run easy marketing tests and integrations (MailChimp, Jotform), and solve packaging/carrier issues; the result was a return to profitability (Q1 2016 net income $49k), 2016 revenue of $15.7M and $4.1M gross profit, plus stronger customer engagement (email list growth from campaigns).
