How a Seller of Outlandish Party Costumes Optimized Its Warehouse to Grow 400% & Compete With Amazon

Shinesty, founded in 2014 by Chris White and Jens Nicolaysen, is an ecommerce retailer of outlandish party costumes and novelty apparel that grew quickly — about 400% year-over-year in 2015–2016. That fast growth exposed major fulfillment pain points: seasonal stockouts, all‑night packing shifts, and an aging warehouse system that couldn’t scale or provide reliable performance metrics.

To fix this Shinesty moved to Shopify Plus and implemented ShipHero’s mobile warehouse management (real-time inventory, batch picking, and intelligent pick routes), plus new KPIs like picks-per-hour. The changes sped order fulfillment, reduced labor time, made performance measurable, and gave the company the operational scale and efficiency to handle traffic spikes and better compete with Amazon and other large retailers.
