Case Study: Dressbarn achieves rapid online relaunch and $100M sales pace with Shopify Plus

A Shopify Case Study

Preview of the Dressbarn Case Study

Dressbarn, faced with 650 closing stores, saved itself from extinction by going completely online

Dressbarn, a decades-old American fashion retailer that operated 650 U.S. stores, faced extinction in 2019 under heavy debt and untenable retail overhead. Although it already did about $100M a year online, ecommerce had been an afterthought, so the leadership’s challenge was to preserve the loyal customer base and rebuild the business entirely online—quickly—while migrating a massive customer database and adding SKUs from scratch.

New ownership closed the stores and, working with Shopify Plus, launched a rebuilt ecommerce site in eight weeks, migrating customer data and scaling product assortment. The relaunch on Jan 1, 2020 led to rapid growth—Dressbarn doubled revenue and SKU count month over month, handled high volume through COVID-19, and was on pace to reach $100M in online sales its first year, restoring customer loyalty and positioning the brand for further expansion.
