Complex Networks, the company behind ComplexCon, needed to quickly pivot when the pandemic halted in-person events and create a virtual shopping experience that could handle high demand, limited-edition drops, and secure checkout. Working with Shopify and partners Jam3 and Riess Group, the team built ComplexLand as a browser-based, commerce-driven world.
Shopify’s Storefront API and checkout powered a headless setup that kept users inside the experience while managing inventory, payments, and security. The result was a five-day event reached by visitors from 174 countries, generating 1.3 million brand and commerce engagements, with some brands selling out completely; Shopify helped make the experience scalable, low-latency, and resilient against bots and queue overload.
