Art of Play is a San Diego–based shop founded by three brothers—two professional magicians—who turned a lifelong passion for playing cards into a retail brand after launching at a major magic conference in 2013. Their challenge was to build a sustainable business in a niche market: sourcing and producing distinctive decks, standing out among collectors and performers, and converting passion into reliable sales and fulfillment.

They solved this by partnering with the US Playing Card Co. to produce custom lines, curating unique decks for magicians, cardists, collectors and designers, and using Instagram-driven marketing to drive traffic and repeat purchases. Operationally they use Mailchimp, ShipStation and Orankl, with the founder handling fulfillment, and within two years the venture became a full-time, profitable business with a loyal customer base.
