Lorain County Community College builds the first U.S. Fab Lab outside MIT with ShopBot

Lorain County Community College (LCCC) was challenged to provide modern, hands-on educational tools that would motivate students and support entrepreneurship in its community. The college sought to establish a Fab Lab, a digital fabrication workshop, to teach 21st-century skills. Vendor ShopBot Tools, Inc. supplied a ShopBot CNC router as a core component of this initiative.

The solution implemented by ShopBot provided a critical piece of equipment for LCCC's Fab Lab, the first of its kind in the U.S. outside of MIT. The ShopBot CNC tool enabled project-based learning, which dramatically increased student engagement and self-motivation. The Fab Lab's success, supported by ShopBot, garnered significant attention, including a visit from President Obama, and positioned LCCC as a hub for innovation, technology commercialization, and business startup support in its region.
