Florida State University puts CNC into the spotlight with ShopBot Tools, creating 6-foot set pieces and 90-degree cuts

Florida State University's theatre program, led by Assistant Professor Jim Lile, sought to modernize its set production process to match the efficiency of other automated theatre technologies like lighting and sound. Their challenge was to faithfully and rapidly execute intricate set designs for numerous productions while also managing storage constraints. They partnered with ShopBot Tools, utilizing a ShopBot 96" x 48" CNC router to fabricate these sets.

The solution implemented by ShopBot Tools included providing the CNC equipment and ongoing support, such as specialized training and maintenance from staff like Randy Johnson. This enabled FSU to use the ShopBot for everything from 90-degree cuts to intricate carvings in a variety of materials, creating large set pieces like a 6-foot-long rhino and a 12-foot-tall rabbit. The results were highly positive, allowing for rapid prototyping, accurate execution of designs, and more resourceful storage through techniques like flat-pack designs. ShopBot's involvement also provided valuable educational support, teaching the next generation of theatre technicians how to leverage CNC technology.
