Matalan, a 30‑year‑old UK omni‑channel retailer with 200+ stores, faced a sudden COVID‑driven surge in ecommerce demand and needed to convert in‑store inventory and staff into an efficient fulfilment network. The challenge was to fulfil high volumes from multiple locations, support multiple carriers, and integrate seamlessly with existing order management systems without heavy development or lengthy training.
Working with SHIFT Commerce and ShipStation, Matalan implemented a headless, API‑driven fulfil‑from‑store model: an order router cross‑references store inventory in real time, each store operates as a ShipStation user to pick and print labels, and carriers collect parcels directly from stores. The result was rapid rollout with minimal training, over 1 million orders shipped (40–50% of online orders now fulfilled from stores), improved capacity and cost savings, and a scalable model Matalan plans to continue.
