University of Gothenburg improves epilepsy and Parkinson’s monitoring with Shimmer Research

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg sought to improve the long-term management of Epilepsy and Parkinson’s Disease through continuous monitoring of symptoms in natural, everyday environments, moving beyond traditional intermittent clinical assessments. They partnered with Shimmer Research and utilized the Shimmer3 IMU wearable sensor to gather the necessary kinematic data.

Shimmer Research's solution provided a flexible wearable sensor system that was used to detect tonic-clonic seizures and quantify motor responses to medication. The data collected was effective for supporting clinical decision-making, leading to improved treatment individualization and symptom management for patients. The study concluded that the information from Shimmer's sensors showed clinical utility for monitoring treatment effects outside of a hospital setting.
