University College Dublin reduces golf swing error rates to 9.69% with Shimmer Research

University College Dublin student Aoife Marsh undertook a project to evaluate the potential impact of sensor training systems on professional golf coaching. The challenge was to develop a system that could provide high-quality feedback on a golf swing's key features without hampering the athlete's natural movement, which traditionally requires years of coaching to perfect.

Shimmer provided its wearable sensor technology, including units containing both EMG and accelerometer sensors, and its Multi-Shimmer Sync software to simultaneously capture movement and biophysical data. Using Shimmer's solutions, the project successfully developed algorithms for feature extraction and classification, reducing the error rate for identifying swing errors to approximately 9.69% through data fusion techniques. This proved the foundation for a future mobile coaching system that quantifies the transfer of kinetic energy during a swing.
