UMC Utrecht detects nocturnal seizures with Shimmer Research, achieving 90% efficacy

The customer, UMC Utrecht, collaborated with other research centers on a project to detect and alarm for major nocturnal epileptic seizures. Their challenge was to develop a new multimodal device for remote seizure monitoring that could move beyond traditional, in-hospital EEG-video monitoring methods. They partnered with Shimmer Research and utilized its wearable sensor platform to acquire ECG and accelerometer data.

Shimmer Research provided a flexible, wireless sensor platform that was integrated into a Multi Sensor Detection Instrument (MSDI). The solution combined Shimmer's sensors with audio and video streams to analyze data in real-time and send an alarm when a seizure was detected. The system was tested in an in-hospital setting and achieved 90% efficacy against the gold standard for EEG monitoring. Shimmer Research's CE-certified platform was a key factor in enabling this research with human patients.
