UMC Utrecht achieves 90% seizure detection efficacy with Shimmer Research

Researchers at UMC Utrecht were studying tele-epilepsy and needed to develop a multimodal system to detect nocturnal seizures and alert caregivers. Their challenge was to create an integrated Multi Sensor Detection Instrument (MSDI) that could reliably monitor patients. They utilized the Shimmer Research platform for its wireless sensors to acquire ECG and 3D-accelerometry data.

The solution implemented by Shimmer Research involved using its configurable sensors to provide crucial physiological data, which was then integrated with audio and video streams for analysis. The resulting system was tested on over 50 patients in a hospital setting, where it performed with 90% efficacy compared to the traditional EEG-video monitoring gold standard. This high rate of accuracy from Shimmer Research's technology is a crucial step before the system can be validated for use in home environments.
