Power of the collective: Singapore insurers unite to fight fraud

The General Insurance Association’s (GIA) member insurers in Singapore faced sophisticated, cross-company fraud in travel and motor claims that was difficult to detect when cases looked genuine in isolation. In 2017, 25 insurers formed a collaborative data‑analytics initiative and adopted Shift Technology’s AI‑powered Claims Fraud Detection solution to analyze claims data and surface links between people, providers and claims.

Using Shift Technology’s solution, GIA members issued fraud alerts that prompted joint investigations and police referrals, producing measurable results: one fraudster was jailed for 14 months after bilking 12 insurers of over S$30,000, and another was convicted and sentenced to 5 months after 20 suspicious travel claims (17 paid claims worth over S$14,000) were uncovered. Shift Technology’s collective-analysis approach enabled faster, more accurate detection across multiple insurers and turned isolated, plausible claims into actionable fraud cases.
