Groen & Boothman - Customer Case Study

Groen & Boothman, Amsterdam-based industrial designers and jewelry makers, wanted to create their “Elements” bracelet series in silver with highly complex geometry, a precise hinge, and a perfect wrist fit—something they felt would be extremely difficult to make through conventional techniques. They turned to ShapeWays and its 3D printing services, using wax, silver, and Nylon 12 [Versatile Plastic] prototypes to explore the design and test the fit before committing to precious-metal samples.

ShapeWays enabled Groen & Boothman to 3D print the bracelet molds and components, which were then cast in silver and finished by hand. This approach gave the designers greater control over the form, made intricate parts like the hinge and clasp possible, and reduced the limits of traditional manufacturing while preserving the handcrafted quality expected in fine jewelry. The result was a successful blend of digital manufacturing and artisanal polishing that produced a refined, high-end bracelet series.
