BeeHero: 3D Printing Helps Protect and Perfect Bee Pollination

BeeHero, a bee and pollination technology company founded in 2017, set out to modernize an industry that had been left behind by automation. Facing major challenges such as colony collapse disorder, rising disease and parasite pressures, and the need for better visibility into hive health, BeeHero needed a way to detect problems early and help commercial beekeepers make faster, smarter decisions. To support this effort, BeeHero worked with ShapeWays to create 3D printed hardware for its smart beehive monitoring system.

ShapeWays provided 3D printed components for BeeHero’s sensor housings, using Nylon 12 and SLS technology to produce two nearly identical halves that enclose electronic sensors. The result was a faster, more reliable development process and third-generation hardware that was smaller, better-looking, durable, and accepted by bees in the hive. BeeHero’s system now measures sound, weight, and temperature in real time, helping beekeepers predict, prevent, and treat problems before they damage colonies and crops.
