3D Printed Device Mounts: Elegant, Efficient & Rugged Enough for Years of Off-Roading

67 Designs, founded by Gavin Stener, needed a better way to create rugged, high-end device mounts for iPads and other gear used in off-road vehicles, boats, planes, and work setups. The challenge was to replace bulky, unattractive, and unreliable mounting solutions with designs that were durable, functional, and visually refined while still supporting rapid product iteration.

To solve this, 67 Designs worked with Shapeways using selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing, ultimately favoring Nylon 12 [Versatile Plastic] for durability. Shapeways enabled efficient on-demand production of complex, support-free parts that helped 67 Designs launch and evolve multiple product generations; the results were strong enough that, over five years, none of the iPad mounts installed in rental off-roading vehicles broke, demonstrating the long-term reliability of Shapeways’ manufacturing.
