Leveraging IoT in Retail by Tracking Shoppers

EDEKA worked with Sewio Networks to gain continuous customer behavior analysis in retail. The project was implemented in 2016 in Germany and focused on tracking shoppers in store to better understand movement patterns, store space use, and product interaction.

Sewio Networks, delivered through partner Grottini LAB, deployed a Sewio RTLS across 1,800 square meters using 24 anchors, 250 shopping carts, and 50 baskets, with infrared cameras on the ceiling to add product-touch data. The system showed where customers spent time, whether they touched products and added them to carts, and how their paths changed during the day, giving EDEKA and its vendors data to improve store layout, product placement, customer journeys, and marketing offers.
