Marks and Spencer - Customer Case Study

Marks and Spencer, a major UK retailer operating roughly 500 Simply Food stores, wanted to explore how electronic shelf labels (ESL) could improve operational efficiency, reduce waste, boost customer engagement and ensure price integrity. Beginning in 2015 at its Fenchurch Street London store, Marks and Spencer engaged SES-imagotag (with partner Market Hub) to pilot G1 retail 2.7 red NFC and 4.4 red NFC ESLs and associated in‑store mapping and NFC features.

SES-imagotag implemented a full ESL installation integrated with the store’s centralized systems, replacing paper price tickets and enabling NFC interactions. The vendor reports improved label accuracy, reduced staff time spent maintaining paper labels and a noticeable morale boost among employees, freeing more time for customer service; additional operational and waste-reduction benefits from the trial continue to be evaluated.
