Nordstrom reduces event processing latency to under 2 seconds with Serverless Inc

Nordstrom, a major retailer, faced challenges with high latency and technical limitations in its "Recently Viewed" feature, which was critical for driving revenue. They partnered with Serverless Inc. to explore a new architectural approach using the Serverless Framework to improve performance and scalability.

Serverless Inc.'s solution involved implementing a serverless, event-sourced architecture using AWS Kinesis for a stream of customer events. This reduced the latency of the "Recently Viewed" feature from 15 minutes to under two seconds and cut processing costs to less than $100 per day. The success of this proof of concept led Nordstrom to build hundreds of serverless functions and open-source projects like "Hello, Retail," establishing a foundation for future event-driven applications.
