How the US Department of Defense is Streamlining Open Source Contributions with Serverless Code

The US Department of Defense faced the challenge of streamlining its open source contribution process for its Code.mil platform. Their team needed an automated way to verify that all code contributors had properly signed the Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO) for their pull requests, a process that was previously manual. They sought a solution to integrate this function seamlessly into the GitHub user experience.

Using the Serverless Framework, an engineer from the Defense Digital Service built an automated DCO bot on AWS Lambda. This solution provided a simple pass/fail check for contributions, ensuring integrity while simplifying the process for maintainers. Serverless Inc.'s tool made the development and debugging process easy and efficient, allowing the project to be completed in just a few hours. This automation was a key part of the successful launch of the DoD's first open source initiative.
