Case Study: US Federal Agency strengthens hardware visibility and mitigates rogue devices with Sepio

Preview of the US Federal Agency Case Study

US Federal Agency - Customer Case Study

US Federal Agency faced a serious security challenge after hackers remained undetected in its environment for nearly a year, ultimately stealing 500 megabytes of data from 23 files. The breach exposed weak visibility into connected hardware, an unauthorized Raspberry Pi on the network, and a shared, non-segmented network that allowed attackers to move laterally. Sepio’s Rogue Device Mitigation (RDM) solution, including SepioPrime and HAC-1, was positioned to address these blind spots.

Sepio implemented hardware asset visibility and fingerprinting to detect and mitigate rogue or manipulated devices across network and USB interfaces. Using physical-layer fingerprinting, machine learning, and policy enforcement, Sepio helped provide complete visibility into unmanaged hardware and could automatically block known malicious devices. The intended result was stronger detection, better control of connected assets, and prevention of attacks like the Raspberry Pi intrusion that led to the data loss.
