The Public Utility Company of Potsdam, a municipal utility with about 1,100 employees serving roughly 150,000 residents, moved from physical servers to a Citrix XenServer virtual environment of some 350 servers and found their legacy backup software could not protect the new infrastructure. To address this, they evaluated solutions and selected SEP Software’s Xen & Now and SEP sesam to meet the demands of virtualization and rapidly growing data.

SEP Software deployed Xen & Now with SEP sesam to perform agentless backups of Citrix XenServers and virtual guests, writing full OS, configuration and user data to a secondary disk array and transferring backups offsite to LTO4/LTO5 autoloaders via two SEP sesam remote device servers. The implementation delivered flawless backups for six months, daily protection for most VMs (weekly for less critical servers), accelerated Novell NetWare-to-OES migrations, and reduced backup monitoring time to just 3–4 hours per week, significantly improving reliability and operational efficiency.
