Center for Human Genetics and Laboratory Diagnostics - Customer Case Study

The Center for Human Genetics and Laboratory Diagnostics, a Munich-based diagnostic institute, was facing exploding data volumes from high-resolution imaging and Next Generation Sequencing (growth from 5 TB/day to ~20 TB/day) and needed a backup that supported a heterogeneous environment (Linux, Windows, MySQL, MS SQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL), bare-metal recovery, deduplication and GlusterFS replication. After finding many vendors insufficiently scalable—especially for Linux—the Center selected SEP Software as its backup vendor.

SEP Software implemented its backup platform with Si3 target deduplication to protect the mixed environment, enable deduplicated backups to disk and tape, and support automatic replication and bare-metal restores. The SEP Software solution now covers the entire infrastructure, significantly reduced the backup storage footprint through variable-block deduplication, lowered server-room space and electricity needs, and allowed the Center to retain backups for the required 30–35 days while managing ~20 TB/day of incoming data.
