How A New Release Monitoring Workflow Improved Instacart’s CI/CD Canary Analysis

Instacart, the grocery technology company, needed a more reliable way to monitor hundreds of microservices during major releases and catch production issues before they affected millions of users and shoppers. As its CI/CD canary analysis became harder to manage at scale, Instacart turned to Sentry to add better error context, deployment correlation, and reduce noisy false positives and negatives.

Sentry was integrated into Instacart’s canary workflow to pull real-time release-specific error data, compare baseline and canary traffic, and feed exception counts into Kayenta for automated rollback decisions. With Sentry’s source maps, tags, and event APIs, Instacart improved triage speed and deployment accuracy, and since adopting the workflow in early 2022, it detected and resolved 81 of 129 buggy releases.
