Utilizing Intelligent Line Sensors to Improve Circuit Phasing Accuracy

Florida Power & Light (FPL) faced the ongoing utility challenge of maintaining accurate phasing data across its distribution circuits. Inaccurate phase identification, often resulting from construction changes or data entry errors, was undermining grid reliability, causing imbalances, and reducing confidence in management systems. To address this, FPL partnered with vendor Sentient Energy and utilized its MM3 Line Monitors and a new Auto Phase Identification software module.

Sentient Energy implemented its Auto Phase Identification capability via an over-the-air upgrade to 9,000 existing sensors on FPL's network. This solution automatically validated the phase for each sensor by leveraging GPS precision and electric-field sensing. The analysis revealed a 12% phasing conflict rate, which was validated and corrected in FPL's databases. This automated process from Sentient Energy ensures ongoing phasing accuracy, reduces deployment complexity, and improves the quality of critical grid analytics.
