Valjevo and Niš modernize waste collection with Sensoneo using 535 sensors

The cities of Valjevo and Niš in Serbia sought to modernize their municipal waste collection to improve efficiency and prevent overflowing bins. Their challenge was that waste collection operated on fixed schedules, which often led to unnecessary pickups of half-empty containers or delays that caused overflows. They partnered with vendor Sensoneo to implement a smart waste monitoring solution to gain real-time data on container usage.

Sensoneo deployed 535 ultrasonic smart sensors on 1,100-liter bins, which communicate via a LoRaWAN network. This solution provided both cities with real-time insights into bin fill levels, enabling data-driven optimization of collection routes. The results included the prevention of overflows, the elimination of unnecessary pickups, and reduced operational costs and vehicle mileage. This led to cost savings, lower fuel consumption and emissions, and cleaner public spaces for citizens.
