City of Buenos Aires modernizes waste management with 4,500 Sensoneo sensors

The City of Buenos Aires, a major metropolitan area with over 13 million inhabitants, faced inefficiencies in its waste collection services due to its growing population. Traditional fixed-frequency collections were costly and often mismatched with actual waste production, leading to both unnecessary hauls and overflowing bins. The city partnered with Sensoneo to gather reliable data to optimize bin placement and plan a future dynamic collection system.

Sensoneo implemented a solution deploying 4,500 of its ultrasonic smart sensors on general waste containers, using both NB-IoT and LoRaWAN connectivity. This provided the city with real-time fill-level data, enabling the optimization of collection routes and bin placement. The project made Buenos Aires the first city in Latin America to implement smart waste monitoring on such a large scale, resulting in reduced operational costs, minimized environmental impact, and more efficient, transparent services.
