Continente Labs launches Portugal’s first autonomous store with Sensei and serves 4M+ items

Continente Labs, a division of the multinational retailer Sonae, sought to transform the retail experience by opening Portugal's first autonomous supermarket. They partnered with the vendor Sensei to create a seamless, checkout-free shopping experience that would meet the needs of a fast-paced urban customer base in Lisbon.

Sensei implemented its AI-powered platform, which combined computer vision, proprietary weight sensors, and algorithms to enable a completely autonomous store. This solution allowed customers to simply tap a card to enter, pick up items, and leave without any scanning or waiting. Since its opening in May 2021, the 140 sqm Continente Labs store has sold over 4 million items, setting a new standard for autonomous retail in Europe.
