A SendGrid Case Study
eBay, a global ecommerce marketplace handling $84 billion in gross merchandise volume and 167 million active users, moved away from traditional batch-and-blast email marketing to pursue true 1:1 personalization. The challenge was to deliver offers driven by up-to-the-minute customer interest and real-time product availability—never directing customers to expired deals—across a massive, highly active user base.
To solve this, eBay built an in-house targeting and personalization CRM on SendGrid, combining a machine-learning model with a real-time feedback loop, open-time content rendering, and SendGrid’s event webhooks and scalable delivery. The result was a shift to a few “flagship” campaigns that generate personalized offers in real time, scaling to one billion emails in four months and producing significant improvements in click-through rates and sales.
