Case Study: GD Test achieves early warning trackbed monitoring on a remote railway line with Senceive

A Senceive Case Study

Preview of the GD Test Case Study

How a reliable wireless system provided an early warning alert system for a remote railway line on rugged mountain terrain

The geotechnical services company GD Test was commissioned to monitor a remote railway line in the rugged terrain of the Tuscan Apennines for potential slope movements. The challenge was to implement a system capable of near real-time reporting and alarms without any access to mains power, ensuring the safety of the rail route. GD Test selected Senceive's wireless monitoring solution to address these stringent requirements.

Senceive's FlatMesh™ platform was deployed, using 18 wireless tiltmeters to monitor the trackbed. The system transmitted data to a solar-powered gateway and then to the WebMonitor™ platform at a one-minute reporting rate, sending immediate SMS and email alerts if thresholds were exceeded. The solution provided GD Test and the railway authority with highly reliable and accurate data, ensuring continuous operation through poor weather and short winter days to deliver early warnings of any significant track movement.
