Ecodex LCA confirms Circular innovation as Australian closed-loop packaging goes global

Circular, an Australian product design company tackling single-use plastic waste, needed independent verification of the environmental benefits of its proprietary refillable packaging system (a 100% recycled plastic vessel with an easily recycled aluminum refill). To substantiate claims and reassure multinational license prospects that their solution didn’t shift impacts elsewhere, Circular engaged Selerant and its LCA eco-design tool, Ecodex, to validate the product’s life-cycle performance.

Selerant used Ecodex to perform a Life Cycle Assessment and found the Circular system reaches break-even in under two refills for greenhouse gas emissions, water, and energy, and that about 30 refills over five years deliver significant GHG reductions versus single-use equivalents; the aluminum refill was identified as effectively closed-loop. The Ecodex LCA informed Circular’s product roadmap to prioritize durability, was completed in two weeks, and helped drive an 80% increase in positive collaboration responses from industry partners.
