A Seequent Case Study
Provenance Exploration Consultancy BV was investigating geothermal potential in the Netherlands, where the shift away from fossil fuels is driving interest in ultra-deep geothermal reservoirs. The team needed to make better use of older, limited-resolution seismic, gravity, magnetic, and well data to understand deep subsurface formations that were beyond the reach of existing datasets. Seequent’s Geosoft software environment was used as part of the workflow.
Seequent helped the team integrate gravity and magnetic interpretation with reprocessed seismic and well log data, using tools such as MAGMAP and GM-SYS Profile Modelling to build a 2D gravmag depth model. This improved interpretation allowed the team to constrain basement geometry and estimate the space between the top basement and base Volpriehausen Formation in the Heeswijk region — something not possible with 2D seismic alone. The project showed that existing data can support a cost-efficient approach to identifying promising high-temperature geothermal reservoirs in the Netherlands.
