Leapfrog unearths the first 3D view of the Po Delta geology in Italy

Emilia Romagna Region needed a better way to understand and communicate the complex geology of Italy’s Po Delta as the area continued to develop. Working with Seequent and its Leapfrog software, the Geological Service aimed to move beyond traditional 2D maps and cross-sections to build a first-ever 3D geological model of the southern Po Delta.

Seequent used Leapfrog Hydro to integrate CPTs, boreholes, continuous corings, and water-well data into a 3D model of the Holocene succession, including key geotechnical parameters such as Soil Behavior Type, Yield Stress Ratio, and Factor of Safety against Liquefaction. The result was a clearer view of lateral and vertical lithology variations, critical subsoil volumes, and aquifer characteristics, helping Emilia Romagna Region improve stratigraphic interpretations, support regional planning and infrastructure decisions, and communicate findings more effectively to both technical and public audiences.
