Case Study: Arup improves 3D ground modelling for Crossrail 2 with Seequent Leapfrog Works

A Seequent Case Study

Preview of the Arup Case Study

How Leapfrog Works helped understand and communicate ground conditions for the proposed Crossrail 2 railway

Arup, working with Seequent, needed a reliable way to understand and communicate ground and groundwater conditions early in the planning of the proposed Crossrail 2 railway in London. The project involved complex geology along a 30 km underground route, and Arup required a detailed 3D ground model to identify hazards, inform design decisions, and manage geotechnical risk.

Seequent’s Leapfrog Works was used to build and iteratively refine a 3D geological model by integrating BGS baseline data with boreholes, terrain models, historical publications, and recent ground investigations. The solution improved communication of uncertainty, supported data-driven design decisions, helped target further investigation, and enabled faster model updates when alignments changed; it also increased stakeholder engagement through interactive 3D sharing and reduced time spent on manual processing.
