AngloGold Ashanti, operator of one of the world’s deepest mine networks, faced the challenge of keeping underground operations at Serra Grande safe while mining at increasing depth in complex, fractured rock conditions. The company needed a better way to predict rock mass behaviour and design the right support systems for its galleries and stopes. Seequent’s Leapfrog Geo geological modelling software was used to help manage this geotechnical challenge.

Seequent implemented Leapfrog Geo in the production environment to create and update geomechanical block models, reconcile drilling and mapping data, and support monthly design decisions for underground support. The solution cut model update time from at least 2.5 days to about 1.5 days, improved confidence in rock quality estimation, and enabled faster, safer support recommendations tailored to ground conditions. AngloGold Ashanti reported that the workflow kept pace with mining advances and helped make Serra Grande safer by ensuring no excavation is opened without geotechnical assessment.
