Case Study: TasWater achieves earlier sewer blockage detection with Seeq Corporation and Nukon

TasWater, Tasmania’s primary water and sewerage network provider, needed a better way to detect sewer blockages and reduce the risk and impact of spills, which were often first reported by the public hours or days after they occurred. Working with Seeq Corporation and Nukon, TasWater used its OSIsoft PI System data to explore predictive maintenance and asset monitoring for sewer network conditions.

Seeq Corporation and Nukon developed an online sewer blockage detection proof of concept using historical spill data and time-between-pump-runs analysis to identify abnormal fill and pump behavior in real time. The model detected a historical blockage 13 hours before it was reported, with zero false positives, and the solution is now moving into state-wide trials with PI notifications to provide early alerts and help prevent spills.
