Power Utility Industry - Customer Case Study

The Power Utility Industry, working through an independent system operator that manages the grid for 30 million residents in a Southwestern U.S. state, needed a better way to forecast load-reduction events caused by sharp real-time price spikes. With roughly 100 engineers and data scientists supporting grid operations, the customer wanted more reliable insight into how much demand would return after commercial users reduced load to avoid high electricity costs. Seeq Corporation’s advanced analytics software was selected to help address this challenge.

Seeq Corporation used its analytics platform to identify load-change events, quantify the magnitude of power reductions, and build a load forecast model based on price spikes and load drops. By filtering noisy signals, creating conditions for load drops and price spikes, and reporting the results in an Organizer Topic, the ISO gained a data-driven way to anticipate post-event demand and prepare generation accordingly. The result was faster, more reliable planning that helped prevent outages, improve grid reliability, and reduce the guesswork previously used to estimate load recovery.
